I've actually met Kalan few times. My first time I just got his autograph
at the Sandfly Festival. Then when he came home for the Hometown Rally, I saw him but never got his autograph. The second
time I met him was when Kalan had his Homecoming after he won Idol. That is when I won the radio contest (story below), and
I also got his autograph again after the Homecoming. The third time I met him was when he was at Medicine Hat's Future Shop.
Kalan has a great memory, he remembered who I was!! But all of that doesn't stop me from seeing him again. I hope to
see him every time he is in Medicine Hat. No matter what I have to do!
There was a contest
on My96 and 1270 Chat (Medicine Hat radio stations). The contest was that, from September 27-October 5th, whenever you heard
Awake In A Dream played you wrote down the time that you heard it at. Then on October 5th at 7:20 on both My96 and 1270 Chat
they told you what to do with all of your times. They asked everyone a question over the radio having to do with the times
and everybody was supposed to phone in and they would take the first one or two callers. Well, me, my cousin Genna and my
sister Brittany all won V.I.P. tickets. This what we got to do!
We left school half an hour early and were dropped
off in Medicine Hat at my cousin Genna's house. I could not sleep that night. I kept waking up and thinking about what I was
going to say and everything, because nothing like that had ever happened to me before. I was going to meet Kalan Porter!!
So finally at 8:00 my cousin's alarm clock rang. It took me 2 hours to get ready and finally our ride to the radio station
in Redcliff was there. We were supposed
to be there at 11:00 and we were right on time. As we were just about to pull into the parking lot we heard on the radio that
Kalan's limo had just pulled into the parking lot too. So we jumped out of the truck with all of our stuff and ran to the
sidewalk beside the door he was going to enter through. A few minutes later, Kalan stepped out of the limo and walked down
the sidewalk. Everybody was cheering until he got inside and then went back to the other side of the building where they were
going to let everybody in. We were walking pretty slow and stopped halfway there, beside a window and we just started talking.
All of a sudden I look in the window and there is Kalan, swiveling on his chair, waiting for a radio interview! Hardly anybody
noticed him in the window because they were all at the door. He swiveled his chair and looked out the window so I waved at
him. He smiled and waved back!! I looked over at the door and they started to let people in so we ran over to the door and
walked in. We had to wait a few more minutes before we went up the stairs that lead to the room where we were going into.
While we were all waiting there Kalan and his family walked right in front of us and into the room. As he walked past me he
looked at me and said Hi! Of course I said Hi back but I looked and Genna and Brittany and I had this huge grin on! Some of
the people working there took all the younger kids first because you weren't allowed to bring anybody but yourself, so they
wanted the kids to get out first so that their parents outside didn't have to wait as long. After that was all done the line
started moving and we were inside the room. We were watching as one by one, each person got their autograph and picture taken
with Kalan. I was soo exicted! Just watching him was great. When he talked to everyone he looked them right in the eye and
smiled. It was so cute! The Porter family was sitting in the middle of the room at a table eating and talking and everything.
The line went up the right hand wall then a few steps around the back and then turn, walk a few steps and there was Kalan.
It was like making a square. (Just in case you want to try and visualize this!! Haha)
Me meeting Kalan!:
Brittany was first in line and told Kalan where
we were from and everything and he signed her poster and CD. Then is was Genna’s turn. After Genna had left, Kalan was
looking right at me. I slowly walked up, looking at him the whole time. When I finally reached him I just hugged him right
away without even asking. His leather jacket was soo soft! (the one he wore for "If You Could Read My Mind".) I heard a few
people laugh and when we were done hugging he smiled and is said "Hey, your from Burstall?". I was like "Hey, yeah, I am.
Jamie's is in my class." He's like "Ohh, cool!" Then I showed him my scrapbook. I quickly flipped to the back and was like
"This is my scrapbook we made for you. This is all the stuff we have saved from the Sandfly Festival, the Rally, the Arena
and everything else." He's like "Ohh, cool!" And then I showed him my article thingy that I wrote for the paper and I was
like "Yeah, I wrote that, that's me". He said "Ohh, oh yeah, that.." I was thinking "Cool! He remembers it!" Then I flipped
to the front of the scrapbook and I asked him to sign it and he's like "Yeah, sure! Thanks alot!" Then I gave him the present
from me and Brittany. It was a glass or something cross. It has a tiny bow on the front and a little dangly fish (Christianity
symbol). It had a loop on it so you could hang it on something. On the back it had a little sticker that said believe. That's
what the cross meant was believe. I thought it was perfect for him. When I gave it to him, I took the top of the little box
so he could see it right away. He took it and looked at it for a few seconds and he's like "Ohhhh, thanks! That's so nice...Thank
you soo much!" I was like ":D He likes it!" Then he was like "Oh, picture." He put his arm around me and we both looked at
the camera. I'm pretty sure I put my arm around him too;). Haha! After they took the picture a few people were like "Ohh,
that's such a nice picture!". I was about to hand him my scrapbook and then he's like "uhh...thankks" I was like "Oh wait
I'm not supposed to give this to you am I?" He's like "Haha, no." Then I just said "Thanks", as I walked away embarrassed.
The concert was great! There were alot of speeches and talking
and everything but it was all ready interesting. His friends told stories about Kalan like when they went to Mexico and went
skydiving, and when they tied mattresses behind the truck in the winter time and went "sledding" and a few other funny stories.
Then his dad told a story about how when Kalan was little he asked his parents "Am I adopted??" and his dad said "No, but
the ad's only been running in the paper for a week." Haha! His kindergarden teacher also spoke and told everyone how Kalan
used to help out the teacher and that he loved to read. Kalan was presented with a 4-times platinum award for his new single
and sang a few songs. At the end of the concert Kalan signed autographs. There was a little bit of "line trouble" and many
people were disappointed because they didn't think they would get autographs and Kalan was only signing for 2 hours. But Kalan,
of course, being the nice person that he is, stayed and signed autographs until each person got their autograph. Kalan, you
deserve a huge.....
THANK YOU!!!!
